What Is Clicker Training And How Does It Train Cats?
Training your cat is easier than you think. The secret is clicker training. A clicker is a hand-held tool that makes a clicking sound. We teach the cat that one click equals one treat and we can use the tool to mark your cat’s correct behavior and tell them that they earned a reward. For example, when teaching fist bump, click the split second your cat raises their paw, and your cat will understand that raising their paw is the desired action. Clicker training is based on the principles of positive reinforcement: cats repeat behaviors that get them what they want. As soon as your cat understands which behavior earns rewards, they will start to present it more often, and we can add a signal to the action and start to “cue” the behavior we want.
Clicker Training Tools And Resources To Help You Succeed
Cats Love Clicker Training
While we know cats are safer when kept indoors, this also presents an issue; many cats suffer from boredom and inactivity. Cats are highly intelligent pets that need mental and physical stimulation, and clicker training is an excellent way to meet those needs. You can teach your cat an endless repertoire of skills and tricks using clicker training. If your goal is to burn your cat’s energy, focus on active tricks like the arm hoop jump. If you want to improve your cat’s self-control, focus on skills to improve behavior like sitting and staying on a spot. Training also helps reduce unwanted behavior by providing a positive outlet for your cat’s energy and teaching them alternative behaviors to replace unwanted ones. One or two short (3-5 minute) training sessions per day will bring out your cat’s best, and be the highlight of your cat’s day.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my cat is trainable?
If your cat is excited about their meals or treats, your cat is trainable. People who want to increase their cat’s food motivation should feed small scheduled moisture-rich meals and reserve all dry food and treats for training.
Is my cat too old or too young to learn?
Cats of all ages can learn. Young kittens are a sponge for learning new skills and tricks. Older cats will quickly warm up to training once they see that they get attention, and it’s fun and easy to earn rewards.
Why should I clicker train my cat?
Clicker training is a fun and easy way to enrich your cat’s life, and increase their activity. When you learn how to communicate with your cat, the result is a stronger bond and a more rewarding relationship.
Will I need to use a clicker and treats forever?
A clicker is a teaching tool, so once your cat learns the skill, you no longer need to use it. But you should always reward your cat for good behavior; just like humans don’t go to work for free, cats also need a paycheck to help them stay motivated. If you don’t want to use treats, you can use your cat’s meal to train.
What if I need more help?
Inside the training booklet are links to video tutorials. Cat School is also active on social media, such as Youtube, where you can find more tutorials. Find more Cat School resources online.
Will clicker training solve my cat’s behavior issues?
Clicker training gives your cat a positive outlet for their energy, making them less likely to look for trouble. You can teach your cat new behaviours to replace the unwanted ones.
