Your Dog Is Your Mirror

The Emotional Capacity of Our Dogs and Ourselves

Your dog may be your mirror in a deeper way than you might think. The author Kevin Behan has proposed a new model of canine behavior that explains that dogs’ behavior and cognition is driven by emotion. They reflect the emotions and feelings of their owners. When you feel unhappy or stressed, your dog may respond in ways that reflect your own feelings.

It is not unusual for you to find that your dog resembles you in a deeper manner than the outside. This phenomenon can be intentional or unintentional. This is due to two factors: the “mere-exposure effect” and narcissism.

Your dog resembles you in a deeper way than you think

When you talk to a dog, you are essentially talking to an extension of yourself. Dogs are hardwired to understand your intention and your emotions. They do not need stories or explanations. They can sense your intentions instantly and react accordingly. Even if you’re not completely sure about your intentions, your dog will pick up on it.

Dogs and humans can mimic each other in many ways, including their facial expressions and body language. Dogs can even recognize their own scent. Dogs also have mirror neurons, which respond to an observed or performed action. These neurons are linked together to create an emotional response as if the action had occurred naturally.

Finding out if your dog is your mirror

Dogs and humans are often said to be mirror images. People often choose dogs that look like them, physically or emotionally. This can lead to some interesting situations. A dog often has a deep emotional attachment to their owner, which can manifest in both concealed or open shows of affection.

Dogs are hardwired to understand emotion and intention. In fact, they don’t need to be told about how you feel. They simply react to your intentions. If you’re feeling bad, your dog will know. Similarly, if your dog believes you’re lying, he’ll respond accordingly.

A recent study found that some dogs recognize their owners in the mirror. A dog’s ability to recognize its own image in a mirror has been linked to cognitive sophistication. Human babies do not develop this ability until they’re 18 to 24 months old.

Kevin Behan

Kevin Behan is a dog trainer who has proposed a new model to help us understand the behavior of our dogs in his book “Your Dog Is Your Mirror”. In this book the author suggests that dogs do not react to their owners’ thoughts, actions or words. Dogs respond to emotions, that is it responds to the feelings of their owners. This explains the amazing effect dogs have to reconnect owners with their own emotions.

Kevin Behan’s father was one of the first in the US take up dog training as a career. He taught his son the dominance theory. However, Kevin came to the realization that modern dogs were trainable not because of dominance, but because of their ability to cooperate with others in a hunt. He found this cooperative ability progressed into an emotional capacity which mirrors human emotion.

In this book, the author shows that dogs and humans have a connection by heart, and that dog cognition helps us to understand many dog behaviors which may seem inscrutable. This opens the opportunity to understand the canine species, which in turn helps us to understand ourselves.

What Do You Do If an Off-Leash Dog Approaches You While You Are Walking a Dog?

what do you do if dog off leash

If you’re walking a dog and you come across an off-leash dog, it can be scary. Your instinct might be to pick it up, or to put up a physical barrier between you and the dog. Regardless of the instinct, it’s important to remain calm and continue walking.

Keeping yourself calm in an off-leash dog situation

The first thing you should do when your dog is on the loose is to remain calm. Try not to react to the dog’s sudden barking or lunging. Instead, block the dog with your body and walk away. The distance will help the dog calm down and move away from you.

dog attack

It is also important to stay calm when your dog is off-leash. Off-leash dogs are unpredictable and might want to greet you. Trying to engage the dog will only cause a possible altercation. Instead, try to stay calm and move away slowly.

If you are in an area where bears live, make sure your dog wears a bell. If the dog does not have a bell, it may be a good idea to use an extra-large bag or sturdy umbrella to frighten it away. In case the dog does bite you, try to keep your hands away from the dog’s face and try to remain calm. Don’t run too fast or yell at it; a dog is more likely to bite you if you make sudden movements.

Book: Methods of Protection Against Aggressive Dog Attacks

Using a physical barrier

Physical barriers can be very effective for preventing a dangerous situation from escalating. A good barrier can be an umbrella or other piece of clothing. In many cases, a physical barrier will deter the off-leash dog and cause it to back away.

If an off-leash dog approaches you while walking, the best way to protect yourself and your property is to use a physical barrier. If your dog approaches you while walking off-leash, you should make sure that the dog is aware of your physical barrier, and you should not engage in an interaction with it.

Another physical barrier is an umbrella or push button. The umbrella will provide a physical barrier that will scare the off-leash dog away. Another effective physical barrier is a walking stick, which can be used to intimidate the dog while preventing it from harming you.

Avoiding an attack

dog attack spray

Dog repellant spray

If you see an off-leash dog suddenly walking towards you, try to stay calm and avoid interacting with it. It is important not to initiate any interaction with the dog if you are unsure of its intentions. A dog may be nervous about being approached and may even back away if the owner approaches him. Avoiding any confrontation with the dog will save you both time and money.

The best way to avoid an attack from an off-leash dog is to move out of its sight and stand as still as possible. If you are unsure about the situation, you can hold a stick or move behind a fence or gate. If you are alone, you can walk away from the dog by turning sideways and avoiding eye contact with it. The dog may be intimidated and may growl, but try not to anger it or make it feel threatened.

Many dogs get into fights with off-leash dogs, and if you see a dog fighting with another dog, you may want to step between them. Then, be prepared to separate them if necessary and to call emergency services. While most off-leash dog encounters end peacefully, the dog’s anxiety level will increase if the encounter escalates. A dogfight can end in a serious bite, so you must be prepared with tools for disentangling the two.

A Gift for Dog Lovers

My Dog Sounds Like He Has a Hairball

dog hairball

What is a Hairball?

A hairball is simply a big, wad of hair that your dog coughs up. It’s formed in the stomach when your dog eats his own hair, and it might be coughed up from the throat or the lungs.

A hairball can cause some discomfort for your pet, but it is not considered dangerous if your dog passes it naturally. However if a dog has a condition like megaesophagus, then a hairball can become stuck in the esophagus, which could lead to choking and even death for your dog.

If an animal is choking on something like a hairball, then you should call your vet immediately. If you think that your pet might be vomiting from a hairball, then you should still contact the vet because there could be other issues at hand.

Is Dog Cough a Hairball?

Many pet parents worry that their dog is coughing like he has a hairball, but short coughing spells in dogs usually resolve on their own. They are caused by irritants in the air and a dry throat.

However, prolonged coughing like your dog is trying to hack up a hairball is a sign of a more serious illness. For more information, see our article about kennel cough, Tracheal collapse, and Reverse sneezing.

Tracheal Collapse

If you notice your dog coughing often, he may have a condition called tracheal collapse. This is an inherited disorder that causes the trachea to collapse during breathing. It can result in a persistent cough or a hacking cough.

This condition is usually triggered by exercise or excitement, and can cause chronic discomfort in dogs. Despite its unpleasant nature, this condition is treatable with medications and preventative care.

Tracheal collapse is an important veterinary condition for dogs. The trachea consists of cartilage rings that guide air from the nose to the airways in the lungs. When these cartilage rings collapse, the airway becomes narrow and blocked.

As a result, your dog will cough excessively, making his coughing sound like a hairball. Tracheal collapse can be congenital or result from chronic respiratory disease, heart disease, or chronic bronchitis. If your dog coughs frequently, seek veterinary care right away.

Reverse Sneezing

my dog sounds like he has a hairballIf your dog has been making sounds similar to a sneeze, he may have a condition known as reverse sneezing. In this condition, a dog will breathe in deeply and forcefully through its nose, creating a snorting sound and extending his neck.

This condition can be scary, and it may make you think your dog is choking. Fortunately, it isn’t life-threatening and usually only lasts a minute or two.

However, this condition should not be ignored. It is important to find out what is causing your dog’s reverse sneezing fit.

In most cases, your dog will not require any treatment. Just like a human cough, reverse sneezing fits may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. However, it is always best to visit your veterinarian to determine if your dog is experiencing this condition.

Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis

Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis or kennel cough is an infectious respiratory disease that causes an irritating cough. The condition is highly contagious and can be transmitted from dog to dog through casual contact, sniffing, playing, or sharing water dishes.

It is also more likely to spread if your dog is in a kennel or a crowded environment. It is caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. The symptoms of tracheobronchitis include a persistent hacking cough and can be accompanied by an inflamed voice box.

In some cases, the trachea collapses, resulting in a dry hacking cough. The coughing is caused by a buildup of mucus in the lungs, which restricts airflow. This condition is more likely to affect small dogs (those weighing 15 pounds or less) and may require diagnostic tests such as x-rays and fluoroscopy.

Home Remedies for Kennel Cough

If your dog is coughing like a hairball or is having difficulty breathing, you should visit the vet as soon as possible. Although the symptoms of kennel cough are often manageable at home, it is important to take your dog to the vet if the cough lasts longer than ten days.

The condition can be treated with several natural methods, but a vet can provide more information and help your pet recover.

Honey contains antibacterial properties that can help soothe your dog’s throat and ease his coughing. It can also coat the throat and soothe the symptoms of kennel cough.

Another natural treatment is marshmallow root. This herb is an excellent anti-inflammatory and can be added to your dog’s food. If you’d rather make his tea, simply steep it in hot water for five minutes and let it cool before giving it to him.

Canine Distemper

Distemper is an illness spread to dogs and other animals through airborne exposure or direct contact. Infected animals release virus aerosol droplets into the air that can infect nearby animals and surfaces.

Infected animals can shed the virus for months. Fortunately, most disinfectants will destroy the virus. If your dog develops distemper, he should immediately see his veterinarian. He will perform diagnostic tests and prescribe supportive care.

Treatment for this disease focuses on treating the symptoms and preventing further infection. Medications will help control the vomiting and minimize the neurological signs. Your veterinarian may recommend hospitalization to monitor your dog’s condition.

Treatment for distemper depends on the virus strain and the immune system of your dog. Some dogs will recover within ten days, while others will exhibit neurological symptoms for weeks.

The Smart pet snuggle puppy is a great option if you’re looking for crate training help. This adorable puppy is very easy to train and comes with a crate and a toy in a convenient storage bin.

You can use a soft toy to comfort your puppy during the first few nights. However, keep in mind that a soft toy can be harmful if it is swallowed. Instead, use a durable chew toy to keep your puppy busy, soothe your puppy’s anxiety, and teach good chewing habits.

Dog Third Eyelid

third eyelid of dog

What is the dog third eyelid?

We humans have eyes which are protected by two eyelids, both upper and lower eyelids. Dogs have an extra eyelid for each eye, although we don’t often notice this third eyelid.

The third eyelid is called a nictitating membrane, which is also found in other animals. These include reptiles, birds and mammals.

These extra eyelids are very important to dogs and other animals and mostly have four purposes:

  1. They help to keep the cornea clean
  2. They can produce additional tears to wash debris from the eye
  3. They help to prevent injury to the eye
  4. They contain a lymph-node which can protect from infection by producing antibodies

There are a number of symptoms associated with your dog’s third eyelid. These include Cherry eye, Entropion, and Blepharitis. If your dog’s third eyelid is not closed properly, you should have it checked by a veterinarian.

In some cases, you may need to treat the eye with a topical eye drops or ointment, which can help to reduce the swelling.

Nictitating membrane

The nictitating membrane in dog third eyes is a thin tissue that is made up of T-shaped cartilage and covers the eye.

It also contains a tear-producing gland. When the gland is not functioning properly, it can protrude over the free edge of the nictitating membrane and cause an eye infection called cherry eye.

In this case, surgery may be required to restore the tear-producing gland. However, this surgery can cause keratoconjunctivitis sicca, which is called dry eye.

This causes an inflammation of the cornea and other tissues.

In some dogs, the nictitating membrane may be causing eye problems.

This condition is often caused by the nictitating membrane prolapse, which causes tearing.

The nictitating membrane is a protective membrane that closes across the eye when a dog blinks. The nictitating membrane in the dog third eyeslid is essential for the production of tears.

Cherry eye

Cherry eye is a painful condition that affects the third eyelid of dogs.

It is caused by a prolapsed tear gland. In most cases, you will be able to resolve the condition by massaging the eye or by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs from your veterinarian.

Occasionally, surgery may be necessary to repair the gland. A vet will discuss the options with you before performing surgery.

Dogs with cherry eye should be treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

If left untreated, the condition can lead to infections and dry eye.

Depending on the severity of the condition, your veterinarian may prescribe eye drops to reduce inflammation and moisturize the eye.

However, these medications do not cure cherry eye.

Dogs can develop entropion of the third eyelid. This occurs when the eyelid rolls inwards and causes hair such as eyelashes to irritate the cornea.

This condition may cause corneal scarring and partial or complete blindness. Additionally, your pet will be in constant discomfort. Fortunately, there are several treatment options for your dog. Here are the most common ones.

The first step to treating entropion is to find a veterinary specialist. This professional can perform a surgical procedure to correct the problem. The procedure involves making the eyelid skin tighter.

The veterinary professional must be highly experienced in ophthalmology, as this type of surgery requires specialized skills.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid, which can affect one or both eyes. The affected eyelid will be red and swollen.

It is often itchy and may be filled with a clear or mucous discharge. In severe cases, the affected eye may also swell and develop a purulent discharge. If it persists for a long period, pigment and hair may fall out.

third eyelid of dog

Treatment options vary, depending on the underlying cause of the disease. Antibiotic eye drops and pain meds may help alleviate symptoms.

In severe cases, your vet may prescribe surgery. If you suspect an allergic reaction, you should remove any foods that might be causing the blepharitis.

A dog can have surgery to repair its prolapsed third eyelid. The surgery will normally involve suturing the prolapsed structure back into its correct position. This procedure has a high success rate. However, the eye may remain swollen for days or weeks after surgery. For this reason, it is important to see your veterinarian regularly.

The first step of surgery is to identify the exact cause of the prolapsed gland. This may be caused by several reasons. For instance, the prolapsed gland may have been impacted by another factor such as trauma or infection. Once the cause is identified, the best treatment option is surgery to correct the prolapse.

What is the Best Flea Collar for Dogs?

what is the best flea collar for dogs?

What is a flea collar?

What is a flea collar? The most common type of flea and tick prevention for your pet is the use of flea and tick collars. A wide variety of these products are available at pet stores, online, or through specialty retailers.

Flea collars can be used as a preventive measure against these parasites. They can be used ‌to treat an infestation already occurring on your pet.

Flea collars contain different active ingredients. Some flea collars use insecticide to kill the pests, while others use chemicals that will repel them.

Other flea collars contain a combination of the insecticide and the repellent action in one product. Depending on what kind of pest problem you have (or expect), you might use such a collar that has both functions in one product.

Flea and tick collars come in sizes to fit cats and dogs of all sizes.

These products come in varying degrees of effectiveness based on the active ingredient used and how long the collar lasts before it needs replacing. Also remember to follow any instructions for use provided.

For your pet’s health and comfort, it’s always a good idea to keep fleas off of them. Fleas can cause skin problems, itchy bites, and even tapeworms. There are many ways to keep fleas off pets, but the most common way is with a flea collar.

A flea collar is a collar that goes around an animal’s neck. This band contains chemicals on the inside that repel and kill fleas. They’re safe for cats and dogs, and they’re also safe for humans to handle.

What is the best flea collar for dogs?

There are many different kinds of flea collars for dogs, but only a few that actually work really well. The best flea collars for dogs are those that kill fleas, ticks and other parasites on contact.

Although some fleas will be killed by the collar’s scent, if it doesn’t kill them on contact, they’ll just jump off the dog’s fur and back onto the dog again.

Other types of flea collars don’t need to kill the insects immediately; they just repel them. However, if you think about it, this is only an effective strategy in cold weather when the insect won’t be able to survive outside the dog, anyway.

If you live in a warm climate where there are plenty of opportunities for the insects to hide inside, they’re still likely to come out as soon as you take off the collar.

The reason you’re even thinking about getting a flea collar for your dog is because you want to keep him or her free of dangerous parasites. So make sure you choose a product that will really do that job!

A flea collar is a small strip of plastic that goes around your dog’s neck. It contains chemicals that keep fleas and ticks at bay, so they don’t attack your dog and make it sick.

There are many kinds of flea collars, with different chemicals and methods of use.

Some have to be put on specifically at the time you apply the medication, while we can apply others at the same time as a heartworm or other regular medication.

Some fleas will die within hours after biting a dog wearing a flea collar, but it can take up to three weeks for all the fleas on a dog to die from a collar’s effect alone.

Flea collars come in many shapes and sizes, but most contain pyrethrins or permethrin as their main ingredient. For dogs who aren’t allergic to these chemicals, they provide a very effective way to prevent fleas.

Collars like Seresto contain an insect growth regulator called imidacloprid which kills in three ways: by attacking their nervous systems, by blocking the production of chitin (which insects need to grow), and by preventing oxygen from reaching the insects’ cells (and killing them).

What is the best flea collar for dogs?

Best flea collar for dogs with sensitive skin

You always want your dog to look his or her best, but what about the skin underneath? There are lots of great flea collars for dogs with sensitive skin, but finding one that’s right for your dog can be ‌tricky.

Below, we’ve listed a few things to remember when shopping around for a good flea collar that won’t cause irritation to your pup’s furry neck.

Tightness is important. Some flea collars are designed to fit loosely and they’re meant to be that way. They don’t work as well as ones that fit more snugly around your pet’s neck because they’re not in close contact with their skin.

You want the collar tight enough that it doesn’t fall off, but not so tight that it causes problems for your dog or you.

Check for test results. If you have an especially sensitive dog, look for products with high safety ratings from independent testing groups like Consumer Reports or the Environmental Working Group .

Sometimes it’s worth spending a little extra if you know your dog will have fewer health problems in the long run.

If you’re the owner of a dog, or know someone who is, you might have heard that flea collars are bad for dogs with sensitive skin. This is a fact, but it’s not exactly true.

Fleas are incredibly pesky little creatures that can cause terrible irritation and discomfort in your dog, but there are other ways to fight them than by using topical treatments (like flea collars) that contain chemicals. You’ll want to check out these other options before deciding to buy a flea collar.

What chemicals are used in flea collars?

Flea collars are a hotly debated topic. On one hand, they can effectively repel fleas and ticks that can otherwise make your pet’s life miserable, but ‌many worry about the chemicals that are used to make them effective.

The main active chemical in most flea collars is called permethrin. It’s also a common ingredient in insect repellents for humans. The EPA has classified permethrin as “very highly toxic to aquatic organisms”, but the good news is that it breaks down relatively quickly in water, soil, and air.

Despite this, it is still important to handle them with care: if you get some on your hands and then touch your face or mouth, you could be at risk of poisoning yourself (that’s why it’s recommended that you wash your hands after applying a flea collar).

In addition to permethrin, many flea collars also contain naphthalene or nitromethylene. These chemicals are less potent than permethrin, but they can still cause irritation to pets and humans if they come into contact with it.

People who have sensitive skin might experience redness or swelling after coming into contact with products containing these chemicals.

Permethrin is typically used both as an insecticide and for medication. It can be used as a medication in creams to treat lice and scabies.

Flea collars are used for dogs and cats to prevent fleas from biting them. The collars are a band around the animal’s neck, which contains chemicals that are slowly released‌.

seresto flea collar

The most common chemicals used in flea collars

Deltamethrin, Tetrachlorvinphos, and Propoxur are the main active chemicals in flea collars. It works by attacking the insect’s central nervous system, destroying it.

The FDA classifies these as carcinogens. Most of the chemicals used in the collars are organophosphates, which are listed as carcinogens.

Flea collars, more so than other flea-killing methods, have been shown to produce several toxins that can cause illness in pets and the surrounding people if in close contact.

The chemicals found in fleas collars are sometimes strong enough to cause rashes on dogs’ necks and develop into painful blisters. Also, up to half of all pets that wear flea collars end up with some sort of skin or hair irritation from them.

How long do flea collars for dogs work?

It’s a question I get asked frequently, and the answer is, it depends. The average ‌time that a flea collar works‌ is about three to six months.

This is because you have to apply the flea collar at a time when there is no existing infestation of fleas on your dog or cat. If there are already fleas on your pet when you put on the new collar, there will be no effect at all until the current population of fleas has died off.

In short, you need to set aside enough time initially for the collar to work—which if you’re fighting an active flea infestation on your pet already may not be possible—and then a few more months to make sure those pesky parasites don’t return.

Pet owners might be familiar with the concept of flea collars for dogs. These collars are designed to protect a dog from fleas through the use of chemicals.

When used properly, they can stop fleas from biting your dog and prevent them from infesting your home.

There are different types of flea collars available; some are intended to kill adult fleas while others also focus on preventing eggs from hatching.

A flea collar that is specifically designed to eradicate both adults and their offspring will ‌last longer than one that only kills adults, but some may last up to two months while others need replacing every month.

While most manufacturers suggest replacing the collar every 30 days, there are a few that say they should replace it up to three times per year—it’s important to read the instructions carefully before deciding how often you need to replace the collar.
